Suffolk To Host Inaugural 'Oyster Jamboree' At Smith Point To Promote The Shellfish Industry On LI
The industry had an estimated $16.5 million impact on the local economy, with 10 million oysters harvested last year alone, exec says.
LONG ISLAND, NY — The inagural Long Island Oyster Jamboree will be held on Aug. 16 at Smith Point County Park in Shirley, Executive Ed Romaine and the Long Island Oyster Growers Association announced Thursday.
The event will run from 1 to 6 p.m., featuring live music, as well as contests and activities for all ages.
It will feature only Long Island oyster harvesters to promote the local oyster industry, which has an estimated $16.5 million impact on the county’s local economy, harvesting 10 million oysters last year alone.

It will be free for all attendees, and parking will be free for all county residents.
Romaine said county officials are "committed to growing the industry by increasing public awareness and community engagement initiatives, including the launch of this festival."

“We encourage all our residents to come out to Smith Point that day to enjoy the festivities and the wonderful amenities offered by Suffolk County Parks," he said.
In the event of inclement weather, the rain date will be Sunday, Aug. 17.
