MASTIC BEACH, NY — A vacant, dilapidated "zombie house" was demolished last week in Mastic Beach, clearing the land for open space preservation, Brookhaven Town officials said.

The house, located on Overlook Drive in marshlands, was unfinished house and initially built without town permits, then fell into disrepair, becoming a blight in the neighborhood, according to officials.

The structure was damaged by a fire, then partially rebuilt before ultimately being abandoned, and earlier this year, the town purchased the property with the intent to preserve it as open space, officials said.

Its windows were donated by the town to Habitat for Humanity in a gesture of sustainability, according to officials.

The preservation of the property will help restore and protect the sensitive marshland area for the benefit of the environment and the community.
