Here are the top four stories in Shirley-Mastic today:

- For those who want to attend a candlelight Christmas service in the neighborhood, the South Bay Church on Montauk Highway hosts a one-hour sing-along service on Christmas eve at 3 p.m. or 5 p.m. The event is free admission. For more information, visit here. (South Bay Church)
- What will you do on the first day of 2023? If you want to do something different or like to be in contact with nature, join thousands of New Yorkers and participate in the 12th annual First Day Hikes. Various parks and trails will be open on Long Island on Jan. 1. Don't forget to dress for the weather! The link I've shared lists places to go hiking for those who need tips. (Patch)

From my notebook:
- Police seek a trio who towed a 1988 Subaru from a home on Huntington Drive in Mastic. Cameras show three people towing the vehicle at 2:30 p.m. without the owner's permission on Aug. 15. Police are seeking any information to identify the ones involved. (Mastic-Shirley Patch)
- A teenager from Long Island is fighting a rare disease. Lafora is a condition that affects only eighty people worldwide and consists of severe myoclonus epilepsy episodes. Click here to learn her story, and if you would like to help with medical expenses, a GoFundMe page has been set up with a goal of $150,000. (LI News12)
