9-Year-Old Boy Calls Out Dangerous Intersection in SoHo

A boy who traversed the intersection of Kenmare and Lafayette Street everyday going to school made a video about the problem.

SOHO, NY —A Manhattan fourth grader caught the attention of the Department of Transportation after he made a mini-documentary addressing a dangerous intersection in SoHo.

Lucas Maxwell, 9, made the documentary about the intersection at Kenmare and Lafayette Street, which he was forced to cross on his way home from school every day, Eyewitness News reported.

In the documentary, which he made with the help of his father and brother, he called the intersection “the corner of death.” Maxwell said people were in danger of being hit because of cars making a left turn at the intersection.

"It was very funny, but it was also smart and respectful, and he made some really good points about this corner," said the Department of Transportation, or DOT, Commissioner Polly Trottenberg to Eyewitness News.

On Aug. 3, the DOT invited Maxwell to hear the safety enhancements the DOT was going to implement for that intersection. The DOT put new lane markers and a signal that gives pedestrians a head start for crossing at the intersection.

Maxwell’s safety concerns were spot on, reported Eyewitness News, because Lafayette and Kenmare are in the top 1 percent of intersections where left turn crashes occur in NYC.
