$100 Million Wow House: Stonewall Farm

The CEO of Calvin Klein, Inc. built a stunning estate and world-class equestrian facility an hour north of NYC in bucolic Westchester.

GRANITE SPRINGS, NY — An estate like no other in the Hudson Valley, Stonewall Farm has been home for four decades to Barry K. Schwartz, co-founder of the Calvin Klein global fashion empire, and his wife Sheryl.

It's now on the market for $100 million.

"There are few properties in the world which qualify as a 'once in a generation' property. Stonewall Farm definitely belongs to this esteemed category of rare estates," said Ilija Pavlovic, president and CEO of Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester and Hudson Valley. "We are very excited for the opportunity to present to our customers for the first time in history this most beautiful 740-acre estate, less than an hour’s drive from Manhattan."

Schwartz made his fortune when he advanced $10,000 to a childhood friend who needed to create samples to start a fashion line. The two built Calvin Klein, Inc. into a multi-billion-dollar entity with Schwartz as CEO and Klein the creative visionary.

Stonewall Farm is known globally, as the Schwartzes have bred roughly 40 stake-winning racehorses in its world-class equestrian facilities.

For another thing, it is the largest privately-owned property in Westchester County. And then there's the fact that Stonewall Farm is gorgeous inside and out.

The main house, designed in 2004 by New York-based architect Rebecca Rasmussen, has a white clapboard facade and columned balustrade under a roof of slate repurposed from Yale Divinity School. British interior designer Kelly Hoppen styled the 24,000-square-foot of living space, featured many times in numerous publications.

Here are just a few highlights of the interior — you really have to watch the video — a two-story library connected by a spiral staircase with saddle-leather tiles accenting the floors and fireplace; a two-story second-floor sitting room with walls of windows; the sunroom with arched glass ceiling and French doors opening to a bluestone terrace; the master suite with enormous stone and wood soaking tub.

Outside, there are formal French and Japanese gardens designed by noted landscape architect Edmund D. Hollander, and a butterfly house, and miles of riding trails as well as paddocks and pastures. Lavender and boxwood hedges lead to a columned pergola, trellised in wisteria, linking the main residence to the 4,000-square-foot pavilion-style pool house and 60-foot-long indoor pool.

FYI, the estate also includes a 40-stall yearling barn, two 24-stall broodmare barns and a turf racetrack; stands of mature trees, apple orchards, rolling hills, ancient stone walls and sweeping vistas of the countryside; a working cattle ranch and hay fields; and an original stone spring house tapping into an aquifer and supplying hundreds of gallons of water a day. Auxiliary housing includes eight staff residences, a guest house and caretaker’s residence.
