BFD to Head to Staten Island with Bus Full of Supplies

Brewster Fire Department (BFD) members are turning to residents for help packing a bus with supplies for New Yorkers hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

The vehicle will sit outside the main station everyday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., so folks can stop by and add their contributions. Once the bus is full, Chief Dave O'Hara told Patch, BFD volunteers will drive down to Staten Island—where Hurricane Sandy's devastation is severe—and deliver the donations to a Veterans of Foreign Wars post that is dispensing supplies.

Organizers say the following items are needed:

• Baby food and formula
• Baked goods
• Blankets
• Bleach
• Bottled water
• Bread
• Canned goods
• Can openers
• Cereal
• Cleaning supplies
• Coats
• Diapers and wipes
• Garbage bags
• Juice (canned or bottled)
• Paper products
• Pet food
• Socks
• Toiletries

O'Hara said the effort is a joint one between the BFD (located at 501 North Main Street) and the Putnam Lake Fire Department. The bus there is nearly full.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Kelly's Corner posted the following on Facebook Sunday:

We will be making a gasoline run to Rockaway and Breezy Point on Tuesday for those affected by Sandy. We are accepting gas can donations (preferably full) at the restaurant tonight and tomorrow. We can also accept clothing, blankets, and toiletries that will be distributed by the FDNY. Thank you.

St. Lawrence O’Toole Church on Prospect Street in Brewster is a collection point for people who want to donate money or items for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Trucks will be transporting goods to badly hit place in the New York area during the week.

What is most needed are nonperishable food, blankets, warm clothing, bottled water and hygiene products. If you are able to donate, please bring these items to the parish house at 31 Prospect Street, Brewster between 9 am. and 8 p.m. any day this week, up to Sunday, Nov. 11.
