Brewster's Water Emergency Continues

The devastating storm damaged the village's wells.

BREWSTER, NY — Severe water restrictions continue for Brewster residents and businesses while the village awaits repairs to equipment damaged in the devastating rains of July 9.

The Hudson Valley and other parts of the state received more than 8 inches of rain from July 9 to July 10. The massive rainstorm killed one, caused creeks, streams and rivers to overflow, undermined and closed roadways and damaged infrastructure across the region.

In Brewster, the excessive rainfall caused the pumps in the wellfield to clog.

A week ago, village officials learned that repairs would not be quick and declared a health emergency.

Now Mayor James Schoenig has extended the Local Water Emergency until further notice as the water department monitors the pumps and makes repairs while waiting for replacement parts.
