Buckle Up New York Continues in Brewster

Law enforcement officers across the state, including those with the Village of Brewster Police Department, are concentrating on enforcing seat belt use for a few more days.

"Although New York State enacted the first mandatory safety belt use law in the nation in 1984, it is estimated that today only about 84 percent of New York State motorists always wear safety restraints," officials say in a statement on the website for Buckle Up New York initiative . "The ongoing Buckle Up New York campaign works to continually increase this use rate."

The program, which began May 20, runs through June 2.

Brewster cops issued nearly two dozen tickets during the effort last year.
