A 56-year-old Carmel man who was convicted of driving while intoxicated in 2006 was recently behind the wheel with a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit, officials say.
Carmel Police Sgt. John Dearman was responding to a call of an erratic driver at about 7 p.m. Sept. 16 when he found the vehicle on the shoulder of Drewville Road, near the intersection of Old Brimstone Road. The front passenger tire was missing and a rear tire was flat, authorities said in a statement released Tuesday.
Dearman interviewed the driver, Lawrence Knapp, and administered a field sobriety test. Knapp reportedly failed it. Police say his blood-alcohol level was 0.23 percent. The legal limit is 0.08.
Knapp is facing a felony charge of driving while intoxicated. He was released pending a future appearance in Carmel Justice Court.
