Driver Arrested For Fleeing The Scene After Hitting Dog With SUV
Astro the Golden Doodle was severely injured after being hit by a white Toyota Rav4, according to Putnam County SPCA officials.

BREWSTER, NY — An accident that seriously injured a pet became criminal when the driver fled the scene, according to law enforcement officials.
The Putnam County SPCA says that a 28-year-old woman from the Village of Brester was arrested for fleeing the scene after hitting a dog with her vehicle and failing to stop and report the incident to the dog's owners, authorities, or aid the injured animal.
On Dec. 2, at 5:22 p.m., Putnam County SPCA detectives responded to the Center Street area of Brewster, where a 5-year-old Golden Doodle named "Astro" was severely injured after being hit by a white Toyota Rav4.

Astro was taken by family members to Guardian Veterinary Specialists in the Town of Southeast for emergency treatment. The dog has since received several surgeries and will remain under medical care until next week. Veterinary staff found that Astro had significant swelling and bruising, head trauma, intestinal damage, a dislocated hip, and several other injuries.
Putnam County SPCA detectives opened a criminal investigation, and through information provided by witnesses, Ring cameras, and good Samaritans, the Brewster woman was located and placed under arrest on Dec. 3 at her home.

She was charged with animal cruelty, fourth degree criminal mischief and leaving the scene of injury to certain animals without reporting.
The Brewster woman will be arraigned in the Village of Brewster Justice Court in January.
The Putnam County SPCA thanked the Village Of Brewster Police Department, Guardian Veterinary Specialists, Astro's family, and the good Samaritans who assisted with this case.
