BFD Volunteers Talk Fire Prevention at JFK

A lively lesson from members of the Brewster Fire Department (BFD) kept students at John F Kennedy Elementary School engaged and excited Wednesday.

About 15 BFD volunteers pitched in for the assembly, which was held in recognition of Fire Prevention Week [check out the video above to see the action]. Here are some of the topics they addressed:

• Calling 911
• Checking batteries in smoke detectors (ideally, this should happen twice a year)
• Crawling vs. running
• Dangers of hiding during a fire
• Establishing a meeting place
• Knowing multiple exits from a home
• Remaining outside the structure (and not reentering for belongings or pets)
• Regular drills
• Smoke detectors, which should be in every bedroom
• Stop, drop and roll

Members will cover many of those issues during the department's open house Sunday, which is scheduled to run from noon to 4 p.m. It's set to include a dive tank, a live burn demonstration, police K-9 units, a safe child ID station and more. Officials from the State Police and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office are slated to attend.
