TOWN OF PATTERSON, NY — A Putnam County man was taken into custody after a tense police standoff ended safely.

In a community update, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said that shortly after 5 p.m., on Thursday, deputies responded to an incident involving a man dressed in full camouflage, who witnesses said menaced a neighbor with what seemed to be a firearm.

The man then barricaded himself inside his home and then indicated he might have an explosive device, according to authorities.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team (SRT) and the Hostage Negotiations Team soon responded to the scene.

Around 9:30 p.m., the man was taken into custody.

Soon after, a fire was discovered inside the apartment. Authorities say that it is unclear if the fire was accidental or intentional, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

The sheriff's office says there is no ongoing threat to the public, and the area remains secured.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office thanked the Town of Kent Police Department, the Town of Carmel Police Department, the Village of Brewster Police Department, the Patterson Fire Department, and all assisting EMS and fire personnel for their coordinated response and support.
