Sheriff's Deputy Struck By Fleeing Suspect's Vehicle, Then Shoots Suspect, According To Sheriff

The deputy and the suspect were taken to two different area hospitals, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

SOUTHEAST, NY — A sheriff's department deputy and a suspect are both recovering after a police-involved shooting last night.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says that on Monday night, around 8:35 p.m., law enforcement members were conducting an investigation on Sodom Road, when a suspect's vehicle tried to flee the scene and struck a member of the sheriff's department, causing injuries.

During the incident, the deputy who was struck discharged their firearm, and the suspect sustained a gunshot injury.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, while the injured sheriff's deputy was taken to a separate hospital.

Sodom Road was shut down, between Sodom Lane and US-6, following the incident, according to the Brewster Fire Department. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

New York State Police are investigating the incident.

The deputy evaluated, and later released, according to state police. The suspect, however, has serious injuries.
