Electrical Fire Spreads To Cars And Homes In Sunset Park: FDNY

More than 100 firefighters were working to put out a fire in sever homes and cars caused by a down wire Monday afternoon, the FDNY said.

SUNSET PARK, NY — An electrical fire spread to several homes and cars parked on a Sunset Park street Monday afternoon, a spokesman for the FDNY said.

The FDNY got a call about electrical wires sparking at 764 57th St. at about 2:19 p.m. and it was eventually increased to a third-alarm prompting a response by nearly 130 firefighters, officials said. Crews put out the blaze hours later at 5:15 p.m.

The downed wires caused a fire in the three-story building at 764 57th St., which spread to nearly four buildings, and several cars that were parked on the street. Five firefighters received minor injuries while fighting the blaze, the FDNY said.

Emergency vehicles blocked off 57th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues while they worked to put out the flames. The fire also knocked out power to five homes near 57th Street, according to Con Edison's service map.

The incident comes a week after a light pole burst into flames on 41st Street and Ninth Avenue and leaving dozens without power during a brutal summer day, NY1 reported.
