WOODBURY, NY — A fire in the Nassau County Police Department Second Precinct building has left it shut down indefinitely.

According to police, the fire started at 10:12 p.m. in the kitchen area of the precinct building, which is located at 7700 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. The fire spread from the kitchen to two adjoining offices.

The Syosset Fire Department and several other nearby departments responded and quickly extinguished the fire.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said the damage from the fire left the building "not salvageable." It's unclear at this time what repairing or rebuilding the precinct building would entail.

Blakeman said that police operations were not interrupted by the fire, and will continue unabated. Members of the Second Precinct will move to the Eighth Precinct building temporarily.
