SYOSSET, NY — An American Legion building in Syosset got a face-lift recently thanks to utility giant PSEG Long Island. About two dozen utility workers on Nov. 14 painted and beautified the American Legion Post 175 on Berry Hill Road.

The group taped, cut and painted the building's entire lower level and helped local artist Chris Slama, of Slama’s Wood, present an American flag made of wood and epoxy to the post. The flag was hung in the main meeting room for members to enjoy.

The Syosset project was part of the utility's efforts to celebrate veterans throughout the week of Veterans Day. Workers improved homes and facilities of people who served in the U.S. armed forces. The theme of the week was "Vets Helping Vets."

Hicksville resident Hao Fu, who works in the utility's transmission and distribution organization, said he participated in the activity in the spirit of his grandpa.

"He was in WWII and the Korean War and he passed away last year," Fu said. "I want to use today's hard work to thank and honor the veterans and memorialize my grandpa. I really appreciate our company's support of these local veterans’ groups."

Workers also joined forces tackling six other community service projects for veterans during the week.

"Supporting our communities is a huge part of PSEG Long Island’s employee culture,"Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of the utility, said in a news release. "We are also proud to employ many veterans of our armed forces. During this time of year, when the nation recognizes the sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country, we felt it was especially important to devote our community service to improving veterans' lives."

Barry Goldblatt, commander of American Legion Post 175, told the Syosset Jericho Tribune that he was skeptical of the utility's offer at first. He received a call around 7:30 p.m. and was "was a little suspicious" given the late time.

"I thought it was a phone scam, or they were trying to sell me a service," he told the newspaper.

But Goldblatt was pleased with the work and said it was much appreciated.

The American Legion post wrote in a Facebook post: "Huge shout out to the volunteers who spent all day painting the post. And thank you so much for the flag art work!"
