Healthy Kids, Ducks and Your Patch Editor

In addition to all the action happening in Patriot’s Park next Saturday with the YMCA Healthy Kids Day/Rotary Duck Derby, I, your local Patch editor, will be there holding my very informal “outside the office hours” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event itself goes until 3 p.m.

Look for me at a table with a green Patch banner along the sidewalk loop near the playground. This will be very kid-friendly, as I’ll have mine!

If you're wondering what those lucky ducks are up to, here's an update from Rotarian JoAnne Murray: 

The rubber Ducks have been resting all Winter waiting for Spring and the big day. They were washed and counted before their winter rest and are ready for the big race. For the first race , in 2007, 1,000 rubber ducks were numbered for the race.  We now have 2000 rubber ducks numbered and each person that adopts a duck gets an Adoption Paper with the number of the rubber duck they are sponsoring.   At the end of each year’s event the rubber ducks are put into bins in numerical order to make sure all the rubber ducks are accounted for. A few rubber ducks inevitably slip away under the finish line and a replacement is quickly numbered to take its place. Everyone can be assured the rubber duck they adopted will be racing. The rubber ducks are mixed and divided into 5 bins for the five races. This way if you adopt a six quack or a tub of rubber ducks , your rubber ducks will be in racing in multiple races giving you more than one opportunity to win. Dr. Howard Smith will be at the Finish line in his waders to pick the winners of each heat and the Grand Prize Winner.   

The winners of each of the five race heats win lunch for 2 at the Sheraton Restaurant (donated by the Sheraton) and are raced in the final race for the Grand Prize of $1,500.  2nd prize is an overnight at the Tarrytown Doubletree (donated by the Doubletree) and 3rd prize is a $350 Gift Certificate for Baby Chic Boutique (donated by Baby Chic Boutique).

You can adopt your rubber ducks on line at www.tarrytownrotary.org or by calling Mimi Godwin at 631-0675.  Avoid the long lines the day of the event and adopt on line. You do not need to be present to win.
