Original, 6:05 p.m.: Tarrytown’s Sharon Callahan, a veteran marathoner, can now consider herself lucky to have an injury that forced her to cancel her Boston plans last week.
Callahan, founder of Tarrytown Boot Camp, is among three Tarrytown runners registered to run in the Boston Marathon, which this afternoon was the scene of multiple fatalities and injuries due to two unexpected explosions at the finish line.
Since she is still listed on the marathon page, Callahan has been fielding texts from friends and families this afternoon asking if she’s okay. She too waits to hear from her local friends in the race.
Joseph Kearns is listed in the Boston Marathon participant search as finishing the race at 3,190th place overall with a time of 03:07:02, though Callahan has not been able to reach him yet.
Another local runner is Shelby Harris, whose half-marathon time is listed at 02:02:30.
Now Callahan, who ran the Boston Marathon last year in 100 degree heat, said she will “probably be leary” about doing such a big race again, especially the New York City Marathon with twice the participation.
The next race for her is in the fall in Steamtown, Pennsylvania, which at 3,000 people seems safer, she said. “This is really scary.”
