Minnesauke Students Figure How to Help Homeless Pets

Sixth grade class uses math knowledge to create dog treats.

Patricia Woods’ sixth grade class at Minnesauke Elementary School integrated a hands-on math lesson with a community service project when they created dog treats for homeless pets this month.

The students used their knowledge of fractions as they measured, scooped and mixed ingredients to make bone- and dog-shaped biscuits for animals living in local shelters and veterinarian offices.

In addition to baking, the students completed reflective writing pieces to express how thankful they are at this time of year and a real-world math puzzle, which called for them to convert recipe amounts into fractions as well as add, divide and multiple different mathematical figures.
