Opinion: Komen Foundation Wrong in De-Funding Breast Health Programs

Stony Brook medical student responds to Komen Foundation's move to pull funding from breast health programs affiliated with Planned Parenthood.

In an essay published on the website RHRealityCheck.Org, a Stony Brook University medical student and former member of the Komen foundation's Young Women’s National Advisory Council blasted Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s decision to de-fund breast health programs at Planned Parenthood affiliates.

Saying that "compartmentalized care" is detrimental to women's health, Sarah Eisenstein Stumbar said she could not support an organization that does not support equitible access to comprehensive women's health care.

"In excluding Planned Parenthood from support for breast health programs, Susan G. Komen for the Cure was not acting in the best interests of women’s health. Instead, they are using women’s bodies as a place on which to write their own political agenda," Stumbar writes. Click here to read the full essay.
