Report: Brookhaven Won't Touch 'O' Street Traffic Patterns in Stony Brook

Despite resident complaints about traffic safety on Olney Way in Stony Brook, Brookhaven town said it has not found changes are necessary, according to a report published in Newsday.

Residents have said that residential street is often used as a cut-through between Hallock Rd. and Stony Brook Rd., and some have asked the town to make that road a dead-end road. However, the town said it has conducted studies of the neighborhood and found drivers to exhibit "minimal noncompliance" with existing traffic patterns and signs, according to Newsday.

There are no sidewalks in the 'O' section, which is a residential neighborhood whose streets have a few curves and a speed limit of 30 miles per hour. The town said as many as 575 cars pass through Olney Way each day with no accidents reported in the past three years, though Newsday reports that the Suffolk police have responded to three accidents there between Sept. 22, 2011 and Sept. 21, 2012.
