Setauket Post Office Won't Close For Now

U.S. Postal Service representative says it does not have plans to close any post offices it previously proposed for closure.

Nearly a year after it announced – with Setauket's historic Main Street post office on the list – the U.S. Postal Service has said it will not be moving forward with the closures for the time being.

"Any proposals to close facilities have been placed on hold and will not close at this time," USPS spokeswoman Connie Chirichello said in an email to Patch. "Going forward, the Postal Service will evaluate how best to incorporate them into long-term plans for effective and efficient retail service.”

The decision follows enacted in December of 2011 as the USPS continued to study the facilities on its list.

Congressman Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, who wrote to the postmaster general in August to lobby against the closure of the Setauket post office, said he supports the USPS decision to not move forward with the closures.

"I ... will continue my fight to keep the historic Setauket Post Office open and serving the community for many years to come," he said in a statement to Patch.

Kerri Glynn, a community activist who launched a campaign to get the community to rent post office boxes at the Main Street post office, said people should continue to rent them in order to ensure the post office's future.

"At some point, we're going to face this battle again," she said. "I'd like to be bullet proof, and I don't think it would take much because our post office is simply not that expensive. We just need to show it is loved and used."
