LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island residents woke up to snowfall on New Year's Day as short squalls covered the area in a coating of white.

According to the National Weather Service, here are snowfall totals for the brief weather event:

A chance of flurries exists after 1 a.m. Thursday night, the NWS said. The forecast calls for increasing clouds, with a steady temperature around 20 degree and wind chill values between 5 and 10 degrees. West winds of 8 to 16 mph are expected.

Friday is slated to bring partly sunny skies with a high near 30 degrees and wind chill values between 10 and 20 degrees, as well as west winds of 8 to 13 miles per hours, the NWS said. Friday night will be cold and clear, with a low around 18 degrees and wind chill values between 10 and 15 degrees.
