Things to Do in Three Village: #30 – Walk a Labyrinth
Walking through a labyrinth is a time for reflection.
Three Village has its own real-life slice of Greek mythology: the labyrinth.
You can actually find three of them right here in town: the outdoor labyrinth at the top of the Avalon Park trail, and the indoor and outdoor labyrinths at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook. Today, they symbolize the journey one takes throughout his or her life.
Linda Mikell, the labyrinth coordinator at UUFSB, leads weekly coordinated walks at UUFSB on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m., and leads an evening labyrinth walk on the second Tuesday each month at 7 p.m.

"It’s a journey. People bring to it whatever meaning they want," she said. "It’s open to all religions and it’s present in many, many cultures in the world. It’s a very old symbol."
This week, UUFSB celebrates the ninth anniversary of its indoor labyrinth; a celebratory tea will follow the 1:30 p.m. labyrinth walk, which takes place in the building's sanctuary.

"When you walk during the day, you see nature, all the trees and animals and birds," Mikell said. "At night when you walk, it’s black outside and the windows reflect the candles, so it’s very, very special."
