1 Killed, 6 Injured In Major Fire On UES: FDNY
A civilian died and six firefighters were injured after a fire erupted on the Upper East Side on Monday night, officials said.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY – A significant fire broke out in a six-story residential building at 526 East 82nd Street on Monday evening, an FDNY spokesperson confirmed.
The incident was first reported at 7:17 p.m., with heavy fire rapidly engulfing the fifth floor and extending to the sixth floor and the "cockloft" – the crawlspace or attic between the top floor's ceiling and the roof. The fire also expanded to the fourth floor, according to authorities.
The blaze, which tore through a 50' x 100' mixed-use, multifamily rowhouse between York Avenue and East End Avenue, was declared a two-alarm fire at 7:32 p.m. and escalated to a third alarm – a major fire requiring significant resources – by 7:40 p.m.

"This type of building is what we call 'non-fireproof,'" said Paul Miano, Assistant FDNY Chief of Emergency Medical Service, at a press conference. "Our biggest challenge in these types of buildings is the fire we don't see, that's in the walls, that can quickly go from floor to floor."
One civilian was found in critical condition and later succumbed to their injuries, Miano said. Although he was unable to provide any information about the person who died, Miano said the individual was located in a hallway on the fifth floor.

Approximately 138 fire and EMS personnel were deployed to the scene on Monday night, and the fire was under control at about 10:15 p.m., an FDNY spokesperson confirmed. An MTA bus will provide shelter for those who have been displaced by the fire.
