Con Men Scam UES Woman Out Of Nearly $40K, Police Say

The con artists impersonated the 89-year-old woman's grandson and said they needed the cash for bail money.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The NYPD is trying to identify two con artists who scammed an elderly Upper East Side woman out of nearly $40,000, police said.

One of the scammers called the woman on July 20 pretending to be her grandson, police said. The man said he had been arrested in Florida and needed the woman's help to make bail, police said.

A second con man showed up at the woman's East 62 Street apartment that day and picked up a large sum of money, police said. The two con men repeated the scam on the two following days and returned for more cash, police said.

In total, the duped elder handed over $37,000, police said.

Police released photos of both con men arriving at the woman's apartment to pick up cash. One of the suspects is described as standing about 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7 and weighing about 200 pounds, police said. The other suspect is described as a man in his mid 20s weighing about 160 pounds.
