The woman was walking under the scaffolding when it collapsed, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

EAST HARLEM, NY — A woman was killed in East Harlem just over the border from the Upper East Side Tuesday morning by collapsing scaffolding in a chain reaction started by a garbage truck crash, New York City Police Department officials said.

According to the NYPD's preliminary investigation, the freak incident started at 6:27 a.m. when a 47-year-old private garbage truck driver was driving uptown on First Avenue and struck a parked, unoccupied Kia Forte near East 101st Street.

The Kia was pushed into the scaffolding on the sidewalk by the truck, which led to the fatal scaffolding collapse in front of 345 East 101st St., police said.
