UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The walls of the Upper East Side's Guggenheim museum are home to works of art created by some of history's greatest masters. Artists such as Pollock, van Gogh and Matisse are well represented. But for the next few months, children from New York City Public Schools will get the chance to show off their creative prowess.

The Guggenheim's annual "A Year with Children" exhibit debuted April 26 and will run through June 2, museum officials announced. More than 100 artworks created by kids from all five city boroughs in a variety of mediums are on display in one of the Guggenheim's galleries.

Artworks featured in the exhibit were created by students at 11 public schools participating in the Guggenheim's Learning Through Art educational program, museum officials said. The program is in its 48th year and more than 150,000 children have participated in the program's history.

"The annual Year with Children exhibition is a culmination of the thoughtful and creative work that Learning Through Art facilitates in public school classrooms across New York City. For nearly fifty years, LTA has provided high-quality visual arts education that supports the curriculum while fostering individual expression and skill-based learning," Kim Kanatani, Deputy Director and Gail Engelberg Director of Education at the Guggenheim, said in a statement.

Students whose work is featured in the exhibit are as young as second grade and as old as sixth grade, museum officials said. As part of the Learning Through Art program, the students are taught by professional artists and get to tour the Guggenheim museum. Highlights from this year's program included lessons on how one's culture can shape the character of an artist, architectural design and how to convey emotions in art that depicts eyes.
