Hurt Worker Rescued From Historic UES Museum Elevator Shaft, FDNY Says

UPPER EAST SIDE — A worker injured in the elevator shaft of an iconic Upper East Side museum was rescued by emergency responders Thursday morning, city officials said.

The worker was found down an elevator shaft at the Neue Galerie at 1048 Fifth Ave. on East 86th Street about 8:45 a.m., according to the FDNY.

The worker, whose hand was caught in cable, was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Fire department officials said.

The German and Austrian art museum has stood on Museum Mile for more than a century and was designed by Carrère & Hastings, the architects of the New York Public Library.

The Neue Galerie features work from Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser and Otto Wagner, among others.
