The five-story apartment building at 51-53 East 73rd Street, located between Park and Madison Avenues, will be transformed into a single-family mansion, according to plans filed with the New York City Department of Buildings this week.

The building, which is part of the Upper East Side Historic District, was built in 1885-86 as a pair of Queen Anne-style rowhouses designed by John G. Prague. In the 1940s, the buildings were combined and a single entrance was created, and in 1982, the building was landmarked.
It was auctioned off for $25 million at a bankruptcy sale three years ago to Chai 73, records show.
