Pedestrian Killed In Upper East Side Hit-And-Run: Police

An elderly woman died after she was hit by a transit van on the Upper East Side on Monday morning, police confirmed.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY – An 81-year-old woman was seriously injured in an apparent hit-and-run incident on the Upper East Side on Monday, police said.

Shortly after 10 a.m., Akiko Omi, a resident of East 60th Street, was walking east on East 59th Street – crossing 2nd Avenue – when she was struck by a 2023 Ford Transit Connect, police said.

Emergency responders transported Omi to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, according to officials, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The operator of the vehicle did not remain on the scene, police said.

The Daily News reported that it was unclear whether or not the driver was aware he or she had struck a person, as Omi had reportedly fallen in the street.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.

There have been 92 pedestrian fatalities due to traffic violence so far this year, according to data compiled by advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, 23 of which were in Manhattan.
