Sixth Proud Boy Arrested For UES Brawl, Police Say

The NYPD said it has enough evidence to charge nine members of the far-right group.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A sixth member of the Proud Boys, a far-right group involved in a street fight on the Upper East Side, is now facing charges in connection with the brawl, police said.

David Kuriakose, 35, was arrested Thursday and charged with riot and misdemeanor assault — charges consistent with those for other Proud Boys who have been arrested. Kuriakose is from Old Westbury, New York, police said.

Irvin Antillon, 41, Douglas Lennan, 40 and Maxwell Hare, 26, Geoffrey Young, 38 and John Kinsman, 39, are also facing charges for the Friday, Oct. 12 brawl outside the Manhattan Republican Club on the Upper East Side, police said.

The NYPD said that the department has enough evidence to charge 12 people in relation to Friday night's violence. Of those 12, nine are members of the Proud Boys and three are counter protesters, NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said the week following the brawl..

The occurred on East 82nd Street between Lexington and Park avenues after members of the Proud Boys were being funneled away from protesters after a speech by the group's founder Gavin McInnes, police officials said. A group of six counter protesters wearing masks confronted a group of the Proud Boys and allegedly threw a bottle, sparking the fight, officials said.

City officials criticized the NYPD's response to the brawl in a press conference this week. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and colleagues in the council demanded an investigation into the NYPD's response to determine why officers weren't prepared for the confrontation and why no arrests were made despite officers arriving while the fight was in full swing.

Three protesters — Finbarr Slonim, 20, Kai Russo, 20 and Caleb Perkins, 35 — were arrested on the night of the brawl in a separate incident, police said. The protesters are facing charges of robbery and assault, with Perkins facing an additional charge of resisting arrest.

McInness — a co-founder of Vice Media now known for spouting anti-Muslim and misogynistic beliefs on his show "Get Off My Lawn" — was invited by the Manhattan Republican Club to give a speech and perform a reenactment of the 1960 political assassination of Japanese socialist leader Inejiro Asanuma. The night before the event, the club was vandalized and a threatening note left at the scene indicated the decision to invite McInness was motive for the vandalism.
