UES Apartment Fire Kills 1, Police Say

The fire broke out inside a third-floor apartment in a building on First Avenue and East 92nd Street.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An elderly woman died Friday morning on the Upper East Side when a fire broke out inside her apartment, police and fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to a third-floor blaze at 1760 First Ave., located between East 91st and 92nd streets, police said. Audrey Bergensten, 86, was found in the apartment bathroom after the fire was extinguished, police said.

EMS pronounced the woman dead at the scene, police said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire around 5:50 a.m. and had the blaze under control within 20 minutes, fire officials said. The city fire marshals office will investigate the cause of the fire.

No other injuries were reported during the fire, police said.
