UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A brutal beating and robbery just steps from Gracie Mansion left a delivery worker bloodied on Thursday night, the worker's manager and police told Patch.

"He has pain in his eyes," said a manager at Park East Wine, who said that his employee is doing OK, despite the terrifying attack so close to the shop.

The manager said this was the first time that anyone from the store has been mugged while doing a delivery.

"This is not good," he told Patch. "It's not safe — it was just a block from the store."

The worker had just completed a delivery on East 88th Street between First and York avenues for a nearby Yorkville wine shop about 7 p.m. when the mugging occurred, officials said.

With his delivery completed, the 35-year-old started to head back to the store, Park East Wine, just a block away, police said.

As he neared York Avenue, two men approached him from behind and repeatedly punched him, an NYPD spokesperson said — only a block away from the mayor's home at Gracie Mansion.

The duo then repeatedly kicked and shoved him as they searched him for anything of value to steal, ultimately finding the worker's phone in the middle pocket of the hoodie he was wearing, police told Patch.

After taking the phone, the two men ran east toward the mayoral residence and Carl Schurz Park, officials said. Police said that one of the men appeared to be in his 30s, but had no other description to immediately offer.

The worker suffered numerous injuries, including lacerations on his face, a black eye and pain, police said.

An NYPD spokesperson said they didn't know if medics brought the worker to the hospital for treatment following the incident.
