Upper East Side Fire: Loyola High School Fire Under Control

Firefighters rushed to put out the flames at 53 E. 83rd St. Tuesday afternoon.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A building on the Loyola High School campus caught fire Tuesday afternoon, sending plumes of dark smoke over the neighborhood.

Firefighters rushed to respond to the blaze just after 2 p.m., and the scene was under control as of 2:35 p.m. The fire was reported at 53 E. 83rd St., between Park and Madison avenues, an FDNY spokesman told Patch. He said the fire had possibly originated on the roof of the six-story building.

There were no injuries reported from the fire, the spokesman said.

The building is part of the Loyola High School campus. All students and faculty were evacuated from the school at about 2 p.m. and were moved to the nearby Regis High School, according to a post on the school's website. The school said all students and faculty members were safe and accounted for.

People in the area also posted photos that appeared to show smoke from the nearby blaze.

The spokesman said the first call reporting the fire came in at 2:03 p.m.
