Woman Attacked While Praying At UES Church, Police Say

The 70-year-old victim was praying at St Monica's Church on East 79th Street when she was punched in the face.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The NYPD is trying to identify a woman accused of attacking another woman who was praying at an Upper East Side church, police said.

The unknown woman approached the 70-year-old victim Tuesday morning, yelled at the woman to "shut up" and then punched her in the face, police said. The assault occurred around 10 a.m. at St. Monica's Church on East 79th Street near First Avenue.

After the punch, the unknown woman fled from the church, police said. Police suspect the woman is known as "Annie" and frequents the area near the place of worship.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries, police said.
