Hudson & Charles Opening New Butcher Shop on Upper West Side

The popular, but tiny, West Village butcher shop is expanding with its second city location this November.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Butcher shop Hudson & Charles has cultivated a popular following since opening its location in the West Village in 2013. Now they'll be spreading the wealth to the Upper West Side. Owners Jason Fox and Kevin Haverty announced they will be opening a second location at 555 Amsterdam Avenue near 87th Street in November.

“We are really looking forward to sharing our partner farms with Upper West Siders to bring them fresh products raised and prepared by New York purveyors," Haverty said in a statement to Patch. "We’re in an exciting time for quality food. People are becoming more aware of not only how good meat should be, but the responsibility butchers like us have to provide it for them."

The small West Village shop is known for its locally sourced, grass-fed meat — and the owners promise the new shop will serve all the same options. Beef, pork, lamb, goat and chicken are all available. The new, and still fairly small, 800-square-foot shop will be introducing a sandwich station highlighted by sandwiches such as The Combo, with pastrami and corned beef, and The Balboa, with smoked ham and bacon. They also have a delivery service, which is being expanded to all of Manhattan on Oct. 21.

Hudson & Charles was named the Best Butcher in the city by the Village Voice in 2015.

The location used to be home to a different butcher shop, Schatzie Prime Meats, before they moved a little farther north to 2665 Broadway last year.
