Woman, 84, Hit And Killed By Mercedes Van On Upper West Side: Police

The van struck the woman at the intersection of West 96th Street and Amsterdam on Sunday, police said.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A woman in her eighties was hit and killed recently by a Mercedes Benz van on the Upper West Side, police said on Wednesday.

Young Kwon, 84, was crossing the intersection of Amsterdam Avenue and West 96th Street about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, when a 2018 Mercedes Benz Metris passenger van traveling north on the avenue struck her, police said.

The woman suffered neck and back pain and was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition, police said.

Once she got to the hospital, though, her condition became life threatening and she died from her injuries later that night, police said.

The driver of the van remained at the scene and didn't sustain any injuries, police said.

The incident is currently being investigated by the NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad.

With the nearby entrance to the West Side Highway, 96th Street is one of the busier intersections in the neighborhood.

Kwon was an Upper West Side resident, according to police.
