Wantagh House Fire Deemed Not Suspicious: PHOTOS
Firefighters battled flames on the second and first floors of the home, officials say.
WANTAGH, NY — Firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze that ignited in a Wantagh home last week and investigators determined the blaze was not suspicious in nature. On Thursday morning, flames spread from an attached garage to the second floor of the home on Manchester Road, near Briar Street, the Wantagh Fire Department said in a news release.
Ken Kelly, the department chief, arrived at the home in two minutes and reported seeing a working fire in an attached garage that had extended to the second floor. Kelly saw power lines were affected and he called for PSEG to respond.
Firefighters battled flames on the second and first floors, officials said. An engine was hooked up to a hydrant and crews stretched a hose line to the garage to attack the blaze while another engine crew stretched a second hose line to the second floor to tackle flames there. Two ladder teams searched, ventilated and overhauled operations, officials said.

The main body of fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes. Because the inferno spread to the attic, the blaze was not declared fully under control for 45 minutes. One firefighter was evaluated at scene and refused further medical attention for a minor condition, officials said.
Three engines were sent to the home to provide additional manpower and to relieve the initial engine and truck crews. A rescue crew, meanwhile, established medical command while a second rescue team stood by in case medical transport became necessary. Fire police and a rehab unit was also at the home.
