Long Island GOP Congressmen Hopes To Find 'Common Ground' For Speaker
Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the party's nominee for Speaker, lost the first two elections this week.
LONG ISLAND, NY — After losing in two rounds this week for the Speaker of the House, Rep. Jim Jordan decided against bringing a third ballot to the floor on Thursday.
While Republicans have not been on the same page since ousting Rep. Kevin McCarthy earlier this month, the Long Island contingent of congressmen (minus George Santos) is showing a united front.
"We remain steadfast that the next Speaker of the House prioritize our neighbors’ concerns, particularly: SALT cap relief, 9/11 healthcare funding, flood insurance legislation, and assurances that we curb runaway federal spending in a responsible manner that averts any potential government shutdown," the statement by Reps. Anthony D'Esposito, Andrew Garbarino and Nick LaLota said. "While Chairman Jordan has not yet made an offer addressing our priorities, we remain in communication with the Chairman in hopes of finding common ground."

The trio voted for Lee Zeldin, the former Suffolk County congressman, in both rounds this week.
Without a consensus pick for Speaker, CNN reported, a resolution is being discussed to expand the role of interim Speaker Patrick McHenry until January.
