Retired Police Officer Takes Own Life At Nassau Home: Reports

Multiple media outlets reported he died by apparent suicide at his home last week.

SEAFORD, NY — A retired NYPD officer died by apparent suicide last week at his Seaford home, multiple media outlets reported. Daniel Shirreffs, 46, hanged himself Thursday, the New York Daily News and New York Post reported, both citing sources.

An obituary for Shirreffs posted on everhere.com confirmed he died Thursday. A visitation is planned Monday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home on Main Street in Farmingdale. A funeral service was scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. at the same location.

Shirreffs retired last year after serving in the department for more than 20 years, the Daily News reported. He was last assigned to the department's driver education and training unit.

His death comes just days after NYPD detective Paul Frederico took his own life at his Queens home. The department has hired a team of psychologists to help address mental health issues amid a series of suicides.
