Wantagh Parents Form Drug Safety Committee

Securing a Family Environment (S.A.F.E) coalition created in Wantagh School District.

Some dedicated Wantagh parents have formed a community-based coalition aimed at protecting children from drugs.

The coalition called Securing a Family Environment (S.A.F.E) Wantagh has a mission statement that reads, “to create and sustain a safe, healthy, drug-free and alcohol-free environment where Wantagh families and youth can thrive.” The S.A.F.E  concept was explained during the April 18 Wantagh school board meeting by Wantagh 6-12 Association co-president Liz Greco and Steve Dalton, a representative from the office of Nassau County Legis. Dennis Dunne, R-Levittown, who is working with the new committee.

“We’re trying to ensure that Wantagh remains a great place to raise a family,” said Dalton during the April 18 board of education meeting. “It encompasses all stakeholders in the Wantagh community from the schools, to the churches to the library. It’s really important that we stay focused and on top of this issue.”

Wantagh S.A.F.E has been holding meetings with Dr. Maureen Appiarius, the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction, and also working with school social worker Ginger Mencher.

A S.A.F.E pamphlet has also been designed that will be sent out to all families in the Wantagh School District on drugs to look out for. Wantagh High School student Amanda Rabinowitz won a contest to design the cover for the pamphlet and was presented with an iPad by the 6-12 Association for her efforts.
