Wantagh School District Budget Vote, Hearing: Everything To Know

Residents in the Wantagh Union Free School District will vote by mail June 9 on the 2020-21 budget, as well as for school board.

WANTAGH, NY — Residents in the Wantagh Union Free School District will vote by mail June 9 this year to approve the district's proposed 2020-21 budget as well as for school board. Voting this year will be absentee ballot only and ballots will be mailed directly to every home in the district. All completed absentee ballots must be received by the district clerk's office by 5 p.m. on June 9.

Furthermore, a public hearing on the proposed budget will be held via video conference at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 28. Details on how to access the hearing will be posted on the district's website. In addition to budget forums that were held previously, the district said it will also host two more budget forums on Tuesday, May 19, and Tuesday, June 2. Both are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

There will be no in-person voter registration held at school district offices before the vote. Those who are not currently registered to vote can register online through the state Department of Motor Vehicles website. The deadline to register online is May 26.

For those that can't attend board meetings live, a recording will be posted on the district's website under Board of Education.

A Board of Education planning session is planned Thursday, June 4, beginning at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held via video conference due to the coronavirus.

A Board of Education audit committee meeting was scheduled for Monday, May 18, and Thursday, June 4, at noon.

A planning session and budget hearing is then planned for Thursday, May 28, via video conferencing at 7 p.m.

  • 2020-21 proposed budget: $81.2 million
  • 2019-20 budget: $79.8 million
  • Change (in dollars): + 1.4 million
  • Change (percent): + 1.8 percent
  • 2019-20 expenditures: $54.4 million
  • 2018-19 expenditures: $79 million
  • 2017-18 expenditures: $76.2 million
