27 West Village Households Evicted Amid Post-Moratorium Spike: Data
The West Village saw a 128 percent increase in evictions this year over last, city data show.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — Business isn't the only thing that's bouncing back after years of lockdowns — New York City landlords have also returned to their most brutal tradition.
The West Village saw a 128 percent increase in the first eight months of 2023 as compared to the same period last year, city data show. It's a huge jump but still lower than the 173 percent increase in New York City overall.
"New York’s eviction machine is in full swing," said Judith Goldiner, attorney-in-charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society.

New York City's eviction moratorium ended in January 2022 — and by Aug. 25, 2022, seven West Village residential units had been evicted, city data show. In the same period this year, there were 16 evictions.
Manhattan's City Council District 3 had 106 residential evictions this year, compared to 47 last year, reflecting a 125 percent increase.

Citywide, 1,978 residential units were evicted between January 2022 and Aug. 25, 2022. The next year, the same period brought 5,405.
Some neighborhoods were hit harder than others. Nearby, Hudson Yards, Chelsea, Flatiron and Union Square saw 29 evictions — a 93 percent increase over the year before, city data show.
In Harlem, this year has brought 217 residential evictions — a massive increase over last year's 33.
