West Village Landlord Takes Tenant To Court Over Airbnb Listings

A property manager in the West Village claims a Christopher Street tenant is renting its apartment out on Airbnb without permission.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — A property management company in the West Village has filed a claim that a Christopher Street tenant is renting its apartment out on Airbnb without permission.

Christopher NYC, LLC is seeking an injunction against Douglas H. Murphy and asking the court to evict him from his apartment on Christopher Street, near the intersection with 7th Avenue.

The LLC claims Murphy never asked if he was allowed to sublease the apartment, and that the company never gave him permission to. According to court documents, Murphy was given a notice to leave the apartment by May 31 and has not left yet. The management company alleges Murphy is still renting the apartment out on Airbnb.

The "use of the subject apartment as an illegal hotel and/or bed and breakfast significantly disturbs the building's other tenants/occupants in the peaceful use of their apartments and creates a dangerous environment," the complaint alleges.

Attempts made by Patch to find contact information for Murphy were unsuccessful.
