Man Arrested After Brandishing A Knife During Verbal Altercation In Hampton Bays: Police

The other person feared being stabbed, police say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A man was arrested after brandishing a knife during a verbal altercation in Hampton Bays Friday night, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, at about 9:30 p.m., the communications division received a call reporting a dispute between two individuals in the area of West Montauk Highway, possibly involving the use of a knife. Southampton Town Police patrol officers responded and determined that the individuals were engaged in a verbal altercation, which escalated when one party reportedly brandished a knife in a threatening manner, police said.

The man reportedly displayed the knife in a menacing way, causing the other party to fear being stabbed, police said.

Additionally, the individual with the knife obstructed the responding officer’s efforts to detain him for investigation, police said.

Nelson A. Juarez-Nunez, 23, of Hampton Bays, New York was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor; second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor; and second-degree obstruction of government administration, a misdemeanor, police said.

Juarez-Nunez was processed at Southampton Town police headquarters, and held for morning arraignment, police said.
