WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — A fire broke out in the basement of a Westhampton Beach home early Sunday morning, officials said.
According to the Westhampton Beach Fire Department, the fire was reported at a home on Peters Lane at 2:45 a.m. First Assistant Chief Darryl Schunk was the first volunteer at the scene and reported smoke and fire in the basement of a single-story single family residence, fire officials said.
Schunk was told that all the members of the family living in the house had evacuated, officials said.

The department’s first engine arrived less than a minute after the chief; the crew ran one hose into the basement via a rear entranceway and quickly had the fire extinguished, officials said. Fans were brought in to clear the basement of smoke and the firefighters spent about an hour doing overhaul, tearing down sheet rock and ceiling tile to expose any residual pockets of flame, officials said.
The department responded with three engines, a tower truck, and a rescue truck. There were three chiefs on scene as well as fire police. The Southampton Town Police Department also responded, as did the Southampton Town fire marshal.
