Suspect With Loaded Rifle Refuses To Leave Hampton Bays Home: Police

He threatened another resident with the rifle; neighbors were evacuated for safety and crisis negotiators were called in, police say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — An individual was arrested Saturday night after threatening someone with a loaded rifle in a Hampton Bays home and then refusing to come out, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at about 8:41 p.m. when a 911 call came in regarding someone in a Hampton Bays residence who'd threatened another resident and was in possession of a loaded rifle.

Police did not name the suspect.

When police arrived, the victim safely exited the residence, but the suspect refused to come out, police said. The Southampton Town Police Department’s emergency service unit, detective division and crisis negotiation team all responded to the scene, with the assistance of New York State Police officers and K-9 unit, the Southampton Village Police K-9 unit, the East Hampton Town
Police emergency service unit, Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps and East Moriches Community Ambulance, police said.

Area residents were evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution, police said. Crisis negotiators engaged in lengthy negotiations with the individual, who was ultimately taken into police custody and transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment for reasons unrelated to the incident, police said.

The suspect was arrested and charged with second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor; fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor; and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies, police said.

The defendant was processed and arraigned, police said.
