Bakalo Boys Sport 9/11 Stickers to School

West Islip family reflects on the importance of honoring those who were lost.

Editor's Note: the following was contributed by WI resident, Linda Bakalo.

As my 5-year-old twins and my 9-year-old prepared for the last day of their first week at Bayview Elementary, they were so excited to be wearing their red, white and blue in honor of all who had lost their lives on 9/11/2001.

At the time of the attacks, I was only two months pregnant with my oldest and firstborn.  We lost a very dear childhood friend that day.  He was a fireman with the NYPD and I have and always will make sure my kids know just how special he was.

I also remember very clearly just how all Americans came together to support each other.  The kindness one felt after that day went on for months.  Unfortunately, it seems to have faded.  I wish people would try to keep things in the forefront of their minds and remind themselves each and every day just how precious and sometimes short life can be.  God Bless America
