Man Dies After Boat Capsizes In Rough Waters Off Long Island: Police

The boat capsized at the mouth of the Fire Island Inlet, police say.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A man died after a boat capsized in rough waters off Long Island Saturday, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, the incident took place at 4:10 p.m. at the mouth of the Fire Island Inlet.

A 68-year-old Lindenhurst man was operating a boat, entering the Fire Island Inlet, when the boat capsized in rough water, police said. He and his passenger, David Johnson, 70, of Lindenhurst, who were not wearing life jackets, were thrown into the water; the boat then sank, police said.

A passing boater reported the incident via UHF radio and the Suffolk County Police Department's marine bureau officers and the United States Coast Guard responded, police said.

The 68-year-old was transported to the Robert Moses State Park boat basin by a good Samaritan and then transported by the West Islip Fire Department Rescue Squad to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was treated and released, police said.

Johnson was transported by the Coast Guard to Coast Guard Station-Babylon and then transported by the West Islip Fire Department Rescue Squad to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the incident to call the homicide squad at 631-852- 6392.
